Ostrów Lednicki

The island of the first Piasts with 10th-century palatium ruins. Train to Lednogóra plus an hour’s walk.

An island on Lake Lednica with the ruins of a palatium and chapel from the 10th century. Some researchers believe Mieszko I may have been baptised here – the question stays open, but the site is among the most important in Poland.

You reach the island by ferry, passing the remains of wooden bridges from a thousand years ago. Set off in the morning – the last ferries and closing times come earlier than instinct suggests.
