The Gniezno Doors

Romanesque bronze from the 12th century inside the cathedral – one of Poland’s greatest treasures.

A pair of bronze wings cast in the second half of the 12th century. Eighteen panels tell the life and martyrdom of St Adalbert – from his birth, through the mission among the Prussians, to the ransoming of his body for its weight in gold.

The scenes read like a comic strip. A quarter of an hour panel by panel gives far more than a glance on the way to the confessio.
